Australia wants to use slim chance

One of the duels on the last game day of Group C at the World Cup 2018 will be the one between Australia and Peru. While the ”Socceroos” want to use their slim chance for making it to the knock-out stage, there is basically nothing at stake anymore for Peru. In our betting tips for the World Cup 2018 we provide as usual all important information for this match. Kick-off is June 26 at 4 PM (CET).

  • physical advantages
  • Opponent already eliminated from competition

  • strong transition game
  • very stable on defence

Current form of Australia

This World Cup might become a bitter one for Australia. They performed strongly in their first match against France, where they came back from an unlucky 0:1 deficit, then drew, but still suffered a close 1:2 loss in the end. The decisive goal was an own goal too. History almost repeat itself against Denmark. Australia was down one goal again, then scored the equalizing goal and in the end they even were closer to a win than Denmark. But the game ended in a 1:1 draw and so Australia now has one point after 2 matches and so absolutely must win against Peru. But even a victory might not be sufficient to make it past the group stage. A draw in the parallel match would mean that both, France and Denmark go on to the knock out stage. When looking at the statistics from the Australian duel with Denmark, one thing becomes obvious: Bert van Marwijk’s team had more from the game especially in the second half. In total they had 55 percent ball possession after 90 minutes, even though Australia is not a team that focuses on ball possession and ball control. Instead one can rather expect high balls and a physical game. What Australia obviously lacks is a striker of international format. They have promising offensive players like Leckie or Kruse on the roster, who provide a lot of energy over the wings, but there is no target player in the centre, who is able to turn passes into goals. This became obvious again in the second 45 minutes against Denmark. Australia shot a total of 5 times at the Scandinavians’ goal and the only goal was scored – again – from a penalty shot. A fact the pins down the issues of the numerous Oceania champion. Advantage Australia: Peru doesn’t have anything to fight for anymore in the last group match and therefore it can be doubted that the South Americans give it their all once more. The crowd’s support will rather go to the opponent though. Additionally striker Andrew Nabout suffered a shoulder injury against Denmark, so the World Cup in Russia is over early for him. In our opinion Tomi Juric is an adequate replacement though. Daniel Arzani may also be part of the starting eleven this time, after he provided a lot of energy against Denmark and he can be used on different positions on offense.

Current form of Peru

One can draw parallels between Australia and opponent Peru. After all: Just like their opponent Peru also struggled with converting their chances in the first two World Cup matches. Last Thursday they lost another match 0:1 against France, even though this loss was a bit more deserved than the one against Denmark. The South Americans started well against the World Cup title contender. They were very aggressive and disturbed the opponent early, but the longer the match went on, the less pressure came from Riccardo Gareca’s team. Once again we saw strengths in Peru’s wing game, especially the right side with Luis Advincola and Andre Carillo provided fast wing runs. But: Peru also wasn’t able to convert the high number of flanks and so almost the whole tempo on offense was lost. Therefore it didn’t help that Paolo Guerrero, who is an experienced striker and one of high quality too, was part of the starting eleven, after he only came from the bench against Denmark. In the end Peru only had two really dangerous shots. Additionally they received a very unlucky goal for the 0:1, after one of Peru’s defenders deflected the ball directly to scorer Mbappé’s feet. Now there are two options for Peru: They can either leave the stage with dignity or they rest a couple of starting eleven players, since they are already eliminated from the tournament anyway. We still believe that Peru’s defence is quite strong, since they still haven’t received more than one goal in a match in 2018, even after the duel with France. Therefore one shouldn’t expect a goal festival against a rather weak offensive team from Australia either. This would be an indicator for a betting tip on under 2.5 goals. Therefore we also included this tip in our forecast recommendations. As well as a betting tip on a Peru loss. This recommendation simply stems from the starting positions before this last group match. Bitter: Peru’s only two losses in 2018 were both suffered at the World Cup, before they won 4 matches and drew once. Personnel wise coach Garecca can use the whole roster. We see Peru’s strengths in a fast transition game. They always struggled, when they were forced to make the game and combine through small rooms.

Forecast and Betting Tip

For one team everything is at stake, for the other one nothing anymore. A bet on an Australian victory still seems too risky. Instead we rather believe that the fans will see another match with few goals. Therefore we would choose the following betting tip option: Under 2.5 goals.
